KATHAKALI is a major form of classical Indian Dance. It is a story play but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make - up and costumes. KATHAKALI has the most elaborate costuming consisting of head dresses, face masks and vividly painted faces. Costumes have made Kathakali's popularity extend beyond adults. There are seven basic make up types are used in KATHAKALI , namely Paccha ( green ), Pazhuppu (ripe), kathi, kari, Thaadi, Minukku & Teppu (red). These vary with the styles and the predominant colours made from rice paste and vegetable colours that are applied on the face. The jaw bone is exaggerated by pasting along it cut outs either of paper ti give the face enlarged dimensions. The symbolism of the make-up is highlighted by many types of headgears.
