The Elementary knowledge of Odissi

ODISSI

Orissa is an area of many cultures. This dance form is the most lyrical classical dance of India which still alive for its own sculpture of Sun Temple at Konark.
Odissi was performed by the young girls called ( Maharis ) who performed in the temples. Also the young boys perform this dance as a mark of devotion they are called(Gotipua).
Odissi for centuries had been a solo dance.Now under the name of innovation group performances are being presented. The key posture of this dance form is Chowk. The hand movements are also in the position of Chowk that is Square Position. The basic body posture of the dance is " Tribhanga ". This divides the dancers body horizontally into three parts.
As we already know that in Bharatanatyam the upper portion of the body should be straight. But in Odissi the head and the lower portion of the body bend to one side and the "Torso" till the waist , bends to the other side. The main base is JAIDEV'S ( GEET GOVINDA ) a set of lyrics in praise of lord Vishnu his incarnation Krishna. There are many more famous poets like " Banmali , Gopalakrishna , Kavisurya , Baldevrath and Upendrabhanj who gave their contribution to this classical dance.
Ukuta as ( Rhythmic Syllables ) of Batu nrutya and Mokshya nata which were lately added to Odissi repertoire. In the year 1957 some of the gurus of Odissi formed an association called Jayantika to work for the development of Odissi dance but it didn't progress much till 1960. Whereas this dance is very old but we came to know more about this classical dance now. The dance is accompanied by Hindustani Music .

Some musical notes or Bols are mixed with each other they are called Arsa. And which includes only three Bols called Tihai or Muktai.
The musical instruments which accompanied this dance are -
Pakhawaj , Cymbals , Flute , Sitar & Violin.
There are nine talams are -
Jamba , Dhruva , Mala , Rupaka , Triputa , Ada , Yekatali , Adavali & Aditalam.

The dancers costumes made from the Orissa silk and wear heavy silver jewellery.
The famous Odissi dancers who gave their handful of contribution to expand this dance they are -

Guru kelucharan Mahapatra , Guru Dev Prasad Das , Guru Pankaj Charan Das , Samyukta Panigrihi , Indrani Rehman , Sonal Mansingh , Madhavi Mudgal & Kum Kum Mohanty they still shower their beauty on stage.
