Dances from Central States (Part 2)

In my earlier blog Dances from Central States (Part I) i have written the popular tribal dances from Bihar , Jharkhand and Odisha.
Today in this blog i will give you the informations about the popular tribal dances from Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh states. Their most popular dance is Karma, where women link arms , sway rhythmically and form rectangles. The men form a circular ring and dance with vigorous movements.
The drumbeats keep on gathering momentum as the dance progresses and the tempo builds up.
Next the Bholaji stilt dance is another important tribal dance of the Gonds. This unique dance is performed by the youths who sing and take small steps on the stilts.
The tribal people of Bastar perform Nava Rani and Chait Danda dance in August and October at the time of festivals. During the rains, they perform the Godo dance to appease the rain gods.
During Diwali,  the youths perform the Lakshmi Jagar dance. For one full month young men and women from distant villages assemble near the image of goddess Lakshmi and dance the whole night.
This is basically a ceremonial ritual dance.
