Elementary knowledge of MANIPURI DANCE1
MANIPURI is originated from north eastern part of India i.e. MANIPUR.
For the people of Manipuri Dance is an essential part of their life. They believe that this is the finest and natural way to express their feelings to others. The important element of Manipuri Nritya ( dance ) is 'LAI HAROBA ' which indicates the beauty of nature .
Today , the credit goes to RAJA BHAGYA HANDRA who persue this beautiful dance form which is inspired by the theme of Love.
The Rasa lila dances of lord Shiva and Parvati, Radha and Krishna and the local deities Khamba and Thoibi form.
The basic dance style of the Manipuri dance form is lyrical with stylized , slow hand and body movements.
The steps are gentle, graceful but powerful. When the dancers perform Rasa lila the arena is decorated with green leaves, flowers and white cloth. Some singers and drummers are also play in the raas.
There is an another name for a drum is Dholak or Dhol and khanjuri. There are two kinds of Cymbals one is Kartaals and Mandilas. Kartaals are bigger in size. So,these cymbals are used by women.
The gurus or teachers in this dance form are called OJHA. There are no formal school or institution of dance .So the children go to their gurus house and learn this beautiful dance and they take it as their Proffession.
In Manipuri dance the performer while doing the performance never lifted up her eyes. Yet this dance is extremely vigorous especially when the male dancer performed with the drums and large Cymbals . The female dancer performed in a very gentle and delicate way whereas the male dancers are very powerful and energetic..
But on the whole the dance style of Manipur is never aggressive or loud. All the movements are in a circular form . They flow from one to another.
The costume of Manipuri dance is very simple and elegant. The female dancers wears a long skirt which is Barrel shaped with odhani. Bamboo rings inside the skirt which can hold the skirt stiff
Overall it is called POLOI or PHANIK.
The male dancers wear pure White Dhotis and Turbans made of fine muslin. The important items are Sankirtan and Rasa. Without stamping their feet they expresses every movement gracefully.
Gurus those pursue this beautiful dance form are ' Guru Amobi Singh' and ' Guru Vipin Singh '. And the main exponents are ' Four Zaveri Sisters ' and ' Sinjit Singh '.
